Alan Watts was a well-known British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known for translating Eastern philosophy into English. Born in England to Christian parents, he became interested in Buddhism while still a student at King’s School in Canterbury. He later joined the Buddhist Lodge, where he met many scholars and spiritual masters who helped shape his ideas.
He was a prolific writer who began writing when he was fourteen. Many of his early works were published in Lodge’s journal. He moved to the United States at the age of twenty-three, where he first received Zen master training before leaving before being ordained. Alan then studied Christian scriptures and served as a priest for six years in Chicago before moving to San Francisco to pursue an academic career. Simultaneously, he began giving talks on Eastern philosophy, quickly gaining a large audience at home and abroad. In addition to more than 25 publications, he left an audio library of approximately 400 presentations.
