Beginning of Activision
Activision was founded on October 1st by Larry Kaplan, David Crane, Alan Miller, Bob Whitehead, and Jim Levy, with Jim Levy serving as CEO. Former Atari game developers who were dissatisfied with their previous employer founded Activision.
Activision’s games were packaged in brightly colored boxes with an in-game screenshot on the back cover to differentiate themselves from Atari. They achieved enormous success following the release of his video game “Pitfall!” in 1982, which sold over 4 million copies. The company’s first initial public offering (IPO) took place in 1983.

Evolution of Activision
Everything changed for every video game production company, including Activision, during the historical video game crash of 1983. Its revenue and sales both fell. Larry Kaplan left that year, followed by Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead the following year. It began by creating games such as “Little Computer People” and “Hacker” to focus on developing home computers.
It purchased Infocom in 1986, and Jim Levy was replaced six months later by Bruce Davis. David Crane left the company the same year. After a few years, in 1988, it expanded into corporate applications and renamed itself Mediagenic, with Activision, Infocom, Gamestar, and Ten Point O as clients. In 1988, it released the popular game “The Manhole.” Bruce Davis’s tenure at Activision was brief, and the company was eventually sold to Bobby Kotick and other investors in 1991.
The company later released the game “Return to Zork,” which was a huge success. Mediagenic reverted to its original name, Activision, in 1992. The new Activision went public in 1993. Its games “MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear’s Legacy” and “MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries” grossed over $70 million. In 1997, it released the game “Heavy Gear,” which was a huge critical success. Three years later, in 2000, the corporation changed its name to Activision Publishing, Inc. Between 1997 and 2008, the corporation purchased 25 businesses, including “Raven Software,” “Infinity Ward,” and “Toys for Bob.” In 2008, Activision and Vivendi Games merged to form Activision Blizzard, which was valued at $18.9 billion at the time. Activision Publishing remained a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard following the merger.
Eric Hirshberg was the CEO of Activision Publishing from 2010 to 2018. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games worked together on Activision’s popular game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” which was released in 2011. To put it mildly, the game was a smashing success, grossing $400 million and selling 6.5 million copies in the United States alone.
