He was the fourth child of James Bias Jr. and Dr. Lonise Bias. Bias grew up in Landover, Maryland, and attended Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, before going to the University of Maryland.
At the University of Maryland, Len Bias was a first-team All-American forward. Two days after being selected as the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. Bias died as a result of cardiac arrhythmia caused by a cocaine overdose.

Jay Bias, Len’s younger brother, was murdered in a drive-by shooting on December 5, 1990, at age 20. The murder occurred after a fight in the parking lot of Prince George’s Plaza, a Hyattsville shopping mall just a few miles from the University of Maryland. Following the deaths of their sons, James and Louise Bias became outspoken advocates. Louise Bias became an anti-drug lecturer, while James Bias became a gun control advocate. Furthermore, Louise Bias established the Len and Jay Bias Foundation in memory of her children to encourage youth to be better role models.
