How did her ex-boyfriend Joey Chestnut get interested in food, and how does he prepare for Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest?
Joey discussed how he started eating and prepared for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on The Transition podcast. According to Chestnut, he was always the family’s largest eater, something he was always embarrassed by. His mother would become upset with him and tell him he needed to save for his brothers as well. His younger brother, the greatest admirer of Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi, expected him to defeat him and sign him for the competition.
Because Chestnut was timid and ashamed about eating too much, he didn’t attend the first event, and in the second tournament, the organizer promised him that if he attended, he would be given a free hotel room. He was 21 years old at the time. He said that since the hotel contains a casino, the casino sold it for him. “Oh My God,” he remembered thinking the first time he stepped onto the platform.
Chestnut claims that once he begins eating, he feels as though he wants to eat more. He doesn’t feel full as quickly as other people, but he can also spend a day and a half without eating, allowing him to undergo a cleanse. Chestnut makes certain that he enters each competition somewhat empty. He fasts for more than a day in preparation for a large-capacity competition. When asked how he prepares for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, he stated he does a hot dog practice once a week on average, followed by a full-on contest heating up the hot dogs. Before practice, he fasts for a day and a half. After practice, it’s simply high fiber, and even if he’s not hungry, he’ll be eating lettuce and greens and trying to get that stuff through him. He claims that he consumes more hot dogs during practice than he does on game day.
