McKayla Stacey tried out for American Idol season 21 via Zoom.
McKayla Stacey, 17, of Andover, Kansas, will appear in the forthcoming season 21 show, which will broadcast this Sunday. Her father, Phil Stacey, inspired her to explore singing, according to the performer. McKayla stated in a recent audio conversation with 101.3 KFDI that she has been performing since she was in middle school because she hails from a family of musicians. She claimed that her father traveled with a band as a country performer and that this helped her develop a strong interest in singing at an early age.
McKayla’s favorite judge is still Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Lionel Richie, and she was motivated to give the audition because it was ABC’s sixth installment of the iconic reality television franchise, which somehow connected with McKayla’s father Phil’s journey in season 6 of the show, back when it aired on FOX.
American Idol was originally broadcast on FOX from 2002 to 2016, after which it went on pause for two years before resuming in 2018. Following a two-year break, the program returns for its sixth season in 2023. McKayla appeared via Zoom for her tryout, singing the 1987 rock classic, Alone by Heart. Phil and McKayla’s situation is unusual. Phil’s wife Kendra gave birth to their daughter McKayla in the summer of 2006, while he was in Memphis for a tryout for season 6 of American Idol.
Phil performed live versions of My Sweetheart and Let’s Get It On. Former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson voted in his favor after a short debate, while Simon Cowell abstained. The American Idol cameras trailed him as he first saw little McKayla at the conclusion of the show’s final portion. Phil reached the show’s Final 6 in Season 6. McKayla is now auditioning for season 21 after maturing into a talent in her own right.
McKayla stated that her father is overjoyed, but she is concerned for her daughter. She stated that maintaining confidentiality among her colleagues and family members has been challenging, and she is now looking forward to the program airing on Sunday so that everyone can speak about it.
American Idol 2023 has seen some outstanding acts So far.
Contestants William Tongi, Haven Madison, Lucy Love, Megan Danielle, Colin Stough, and Michael Williams have gotten Golden tickets thus far, with 17-year-old Tyson Venegas earning the season’s first Platinum Prize. Tyson will forego the first Hollywood round, while the remainder will go right into the latter. Tyson Venegas of Vancouver, British Columbia, wowed the evaluators with his rendition of Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind.
Evaluator Lionel Richie praised Tyson Venegas’s performance and asked him to invite his mother into the tryout studio. Lionel then cracked a jest, saying:
“He claims to be 17 years old, but he acts like a 45-year-old. Give me some proof here.”
Following the auditions in Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Nashville, evaluators Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie will determine who will compete in Hollywood Week and other tasks. The next show of American Idol season 21 will be broadcast on ABC on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET.
