Brian Jean-Mary, 48, was a standout player at Appalachian State in the late 1990s. Jean-Mary, a native of Apopka, Florida, graduated in 1998 and started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Louisville. Brian spent one season at Louisville before joining Lou Holtz at South Carolina, where he served as a defensive graduate assistant for two seasons. Brian joined North Alabama as defensive backs coach in 2003, and he helped the Lions win the Gulf South Conference championship and reach the NCAA Division II playoff semifinals.
After establishing himself at North Alabama, Jean-Mary joined Georgia Tech as linebackers coach, where he spent six seasons. During his time, Brian was able to construct one of the most consistent defenses in the nation. His squad finished in the top 30 in running defense, total defense, and scoring defense. Brian guided the team to an ACC Championship win against Clemson and a spot in the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl.
Partnership with Charlie Strong
Brian returned to Louisville for the 2010 season, but this time as associate head coach and linebackers coach. The linebackers coach came at Louisville at the same time as Charlie Strong’s hire. With Charlie as head coach, Louisville went 37-15 in four seasons and won two Big East Conference championships. Brian accompanied Charlie to Texas in 2014. The Texas website interviewed the linebackers coach after he was hired. When asked why he selected Texas, Brian said it was too difficult to pass up the chance to coach such a legendary club.
The interviewer also inquired as to what qualities Charlie has that made him an effective instructor. Brian responded in one word: “Consistency.” He said that Strong is a hands-on coach with solid fundamentals. However, the two were unable to duplicate their magic in Lousiville, Texas. Texas dismissed Charlie in 2016, and Jean-Mary followed him to USF. Brian was able to bring out the best in the talent during their first season at USF.
The squad placed in the top 25 in six categories. However, the enchantment did not endure long at USF, as Charlie and Brian were sacked in 2019. Jean-Mary and Strong’s cooperation terminated when Jean-Mary joined Michigan and Charlie joined Alabama.
Jean-Mary’s Time In Michigan And Tennessee
The linebackers coach joins Michigan’s football team in 2020. He played just one season with the Wolverines. Despite just playing one season with the Wolverines, Brian had a significant impression. He helped recruit Junior Colson and Jaydon Hood, four-star linebackers, and Ja’Den McBurrows, a three-star cornerback.
Before leaving Michigan to join Tennessee, Brian was interviewed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. If he had joined the Jaguars, he would have reunited with Charlie Strong, but this did not happen. Instead, Charlie attended the University of Tennessee. During his three seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers, the team finished in the top 30 in the FBS twice. During his tenure in Tennessee, Jean-Mary shown that he could manage players with negative attitudes and get the most out of them. Brian Jean-Mary, the linebackers coach, has been married for a long period to Jerilyn Ardis. The couple has two daughters: Brittany and Brooke. Coach Brian’s two girls are presently attending Webb School in Knoxville. Brittany Jean-Mary, his eldest daughter, was born on January 27, 2016, and is on the cheering team. Brittany had previously published just one group family picture on Instagram. Her sister, Brooke, will graduate from Webb in 2027.
