During the tournament, he advanced to the second round, where he was beaten by Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands as a wild card entry. Tony Mmoh, a right-handed player, reached his career-high singles ATP ranking on October 19, 1987, when he rose to world No. 105.

Mmoh’s rise to No. 2 in the junior rankings was spectacular. His incredible journey includes reaching the semifinals of the 2015 Junior French Open, where he was beaten by eventual winner Tommy Paul. Notably, he won the 2016 USTA 18s Boys’ National Championship, earning himself a coveted wild card into the US Open main event. Mmoh demonstrated his potential on the ITF Futures circuit before the age of 18, winning three tournaments.

He qualified for his first ATP-level event in Memphis in February 2016, defeating fellow Americans Dennis Novikov and Bjorn Fratangelo. Unfortunately, his trip came to a stop in the first round, when he faced eventual finalist Taylor Fritz, who was the highest-ranked American teenager at the time. Following his fourth Futures championship, Mmoh gained a wildcard entrance into the Miami Masters, where he played top-ranked 18-year-old Alexander Zverev. Despite a brave attempt, he was defeated in a closely-fought match that included two tiebreaks.
