In 2019, she officially disclosed her bisexual and pansexual identities. Her coming out has made her a valuable role model for young LGBTQ+ figure skaters. She made history in the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships by becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ woman to win a medal in the United States. Looking back on her experience, Amber said that the figure skating field often assumes men’s sexual orientation, resulting in a dearth of representation for bisexual and queer women. However, she chose to come out and boldly represent herself as a bisexual woman in the sport of ice.
