Boogie Ellis was born in San Diego, California to parents Rejean Tremaine Ellis and Rowiena Simpson.

Boogie Ellis attended Mission Bay High School for all four years of his high school studies. Ellis, a four-star prospect, picked Duke University for his collegiate basketball career but then moved his commitment to Memphis. He moved to the University of Southern California (USC) after appearing in 59 games for Memphis. Ellis was named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 during his junior year at USC.
