Jones was born at St. David’s Hospital in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, the sole child of teacher Nest Rowlands and shipbuilding Derek John Jones. Jones joined the Bangor Cathedral choir at the age of nine and, while never serving as Head Chorister, rose to the position of lead soloist within two years.
