Werner Herzog Biography

Werner Herzog was born in Munich, Germany, in September 1942, during World War II. He grew up in the Bavarian alpine town of Sachrang, far from the rush and bustle of city life. Herzog and his mother returned to Munich when he was 12 years old. Due to a lack of funds, the family shared an apartment with other individuals. Klaus Kinski, an eccentric actor who subsequently appeared in several of Werner’s films, was his flatmate.

Herzog attended a local gymnasium and worked as a welder in the steel industry at night to fund his first films. Werner attempted to create his first enterprise at the age of 17. He created the screenplay and sent it to a German production firm. The film even proceeded to the production stage, but no one saw it. The project was canceled once it was discovered that the author was under the age of 18.

Werner’s debut short film came in his filmography in 1962. Herakles was a 19-year-old guy who studied at Munich University while also writing a screenplay and shooting a documentary film. He cast Reinhard Lichtenberg (Mister Germany 1962) in the major role. A year after his successful debut, the filmmaker established his own mini-studio and made one more short film, Game in the Sand, in 1964.

At the time, the young man was writing the screenplay for the first full-length film Signs of Life, based on Achim von Arnim’s account. He didn’t discover it until four years later. At the Berlin International Film Festival, Herzog won the German Film Awards for Best Feature Film and the Jury Grand Prix.

In his adolescence, the filmmaker experimented with several concepts, and he made a few short films till 1970. Even Dwarfs Started Small, a film that allegorically depicts the Vietnam War, is regarded as the beginning of Herzog’s creative maturity. His film was banned in Germany, but those who viewed it outside of Germany were divided over it.

Werner’s film Fata Morgana sparked controversy as well. The documentary film is divided into three sections: “Creation,” “Paradise,” and “The Golden Age.” In 1972, the author published Aguirre, the Wrath of God, a novel about the Spanish expedition in quest of Eldorado.

Werner rose to prominence as a filmmaker with the 1972 picture Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The guy and a film team spent two months in the Amazon rainforest filming the movie on a shoestring budget. The crew was dead set on making a story about the conqueror Lope de Aguirre, who was fascinated with an idea. Film reviewers started to associate Herzog’s films with a new generation of German filmmaking that resurrected the national heritage, with works by Wim Wenders, Volker Schlöndorff, and Werner Fassbinder.

The director’s previous picture, from 1981, was as remarkable. Werner’s film, God’s Angry Man, presented the tale of a television preacher, an American pastor named Gene Scott. The video includes footage of Scott on the set of his TV programs, with an emphasis on fund-raising efforts, a bombardment of audience allegations, and many other intriguing facts. The film also includes interviews with Scott and Scott’s parents.
