Career
Smith’s playing career was comprised of two stints with Dundee United, separated by a brief stint at Dumbarton. Smith retired from playing due to a pelvic injury, and he went on to coach at Dundee United under manager Jim McLean. He also coached Scotland’s under-18 and under-21 sides and supported Scotland manager Alex Ferguson during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, when it was reported that he would be joining Rangers as Graeme Souness’ assistant.
Smith took over as Rangers manager in 1991, following Souness. In seven years, he won 13 major trophies, including seven consecutive league crowns. He was named manager of English Premier League team Everton after leaving Rangers after the 1997–98 season. He was a manager at Goodison Park for four seasons until being fired in 2002.
Smith was named Scotland manager in December 2004 after a short time as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager at Manchester United. He oversaw a turnaround in their fortunes, propelling the national team 70 places up the FIFA World Rankings. He quit as Scotland manager in January 2007 to return to Rangers after a successful start to UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying. During his second stint as Rangers manager, he won eight titles and led the club to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final before retiring in 2011.
