Walter was married to Betty Lou Bredemus, an actor and acting teacher whom he met while performing the play “George Washington Slept Here” for the armed forces. They quickly bonded, became great friends, and became increasingly closer when they went on several theatrical tours and married in 1955. They co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop, which was a smashing success. Previously, they operated a children’s acting school and produced 15 episodes of Bum Bum and His Buddies, a local network children’s program.

The couple was experiencing financial difficulties, and the workshop they co-founded was gradually closing down. The couple chose to divorce after almost two decades of marriage. In 1971, his wife filed for divorce, which was completed in 1972. The cause for their divorce, however, remains unclear. Betty brought her children with her and settled in Smyrna, Georgia. Julia was just five years old when her parents divorced.

Betty, his ex-wife, remarried Michael Motes the same year they divorced, in 1972. Their marriage resulted in the birth of a daughter, Nancy, who died by suicide at the age of 37. Michael was an aggressive spouse and stepfather to his stepchildren, which caused Julia and her siblings to have a traumatic upbringing. Betty filed for divorce from her violent spouse in 1983, claiming cruelty.

Eric and Julia used to have a close connection, but it was shattered when Eric and his ex-girlfriend Kelly Cunningham fought for custody of their daughter Emma Roberts.
