Wallace Michael Shawn was born in New York City, New York, on November 12, 1943. Cecille Lyon and William Shawn are his parents. His mother was a journalist, and his father was the editor of The New Yorker. Mary and Allen are his younger siblings. Shawn first attended The Putney School, a private liberal arts high school. Harvard College awarded him a BA in history. Later, he attended Magdalen College in Oxford to study economics, philosophy, and politics.
