  • Viktor Orban was a founder member of the party ‘Fiatal DemoKraták Szövetsége,’ or the ‘Alliance of Young Democrats,’ better known as ‘Fidesz’. The party was created in March 1988, and he quickly became the spokesman for it.
  • Following the fall of communism in Hungary in 1989 and the subsequent transition to multiparty democracy, he was elected to the National Assembly and chaired Fidesz’s parliamentary caucus until 1993.
  • During Orbán’s first tenure as Prime Minister, from 1998 to 2002, he led a conservative coalition administration that reduced inflation and the budget deficit, and Hungary joined NATO. From 2002 until 2010, Orbán served as the opposition’s leader.
  • Orbán defines his policies as “illiberal Christian democracy”. As a consequence, Fidesz was suspended from the European People’s Party in March 2019.
  • In a July 2022 address, Orbán opposed the miscegenation of European and non-European races, stating, “We [Hungarians] are not a mixed race and do not want to become a mixed race. It followed protests from the European Union (EU) over anti-LGBTQ discriminatory legislation. Human rights organizations criticized the ballot as anti-LGBT language that encouraged discrimination.
