Vicente Fernandez was born in Huentitan el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, on February 17, 1940. He struggled in his early years, prompting him to drop out of school in fifth grade in order to help his family earn a living. He began playing guitar and singing at the age of eight, and this led to him winning amateur contests. Driven by determination, he would stop cars in Guadalajara and offer to sing for the drivers in exchange for a few pesos. By the early 1960s, he had advanced in his career and began singing with local mariachi bands. He joined Pepe Mendoza’s band after moving to Mexico City.
