Two Sides of the Abyss will premiere on HBO Max on May 8, 2023, with all six episodes running simultaneously. The thriller, created and written by Kristin Derfler, follows Wuppertal police officer Luise Berg as she meets her daughter’s accused murderer, Dennis Opitz, who was released from jail early after serving seven years. As more murders occur, Luise suspects Dennis, but others are skeptical. As the tale progresses, the lines between guilt and innocence, offenders and victims, law, and justice become more blurred. Anno Saul (Charité) directs the series, while Derfler serves as a creative producer.
For the first time, WarnerMedia and RTL Deutschland are teaming together to co-produce the new six-part crime series. RTL Deutschland has acquired the series’ first-run rights in Germany, where it will be accessible on the newly rebranded RTL Plus streaming platform. HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s streaming platform, will release the series as a Max Original in 61 territories throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe, with WarnerMedia International Television Distribution handling international distribution outside of these regions.
