William Murray Hawkins III was Trip Hawkins’ birth name. He was born on December 28, 1953, in Pasadena, California, United States. He is of white descent. William Hawkins, Jr. and Helen Hawkins were his parents. He was raised alongside his sister Jennifer Hawkins.
He received his undergraduate degree in Strategy and Applied Game Theory from Harvard University. He was extremely intelligent in his work and thus graduated with honors in 1976. He went on to attend Stanford University. He attended the School of Business and earned his MBA there.
