Career

Tommy Haas began playing tennis when he was four years old. He had trained on his own, hitting balls against the wall or into his father’s hands with a wooden plank. In 1996, he became professional and competed in his maiden grand slam in the United States. However, he was defeated in four sets by compatriot Michael Stitch in the first round. He also has four ATP championships under his belt, including his first Master’s trophy in 2001. Similarly, in 2002, he reached the semi-finals by winning in five sets against Todd Martin and Roger Federer, and in four against Marcelo Rios. In his comeback year, 2004, he also won two more ATP titles.

In 2006, he won three ATP tournaments and advanced to the quarterfinals. He needed to win the Paris Masters to qualify for the ATP year-end finale, the Master’s Cup.
