He joined Hellman and Friedman, a private equity firm, in 1986. Farallon Capital Management, based in San Francisco, California, grew out of this venture. This was Tom Steyer’s most successful business venture, generating huge profits and eventually becoming the world’s fourth largest hedge fund.

His firm had a reputation for taking high-risk positions on distressed assets and profiting in a volatile market. When he left the company in October 2012, it was valued at $20 billion. His investments in coal mining companies aided in the production of more than 70 million tonnes of coal. He put $90 million into Correction Corporation of America stock, which manages private prisons in the United States. UnFarallon, a student activist group, targeted him for his company’s anti-environmental policies.

However, after Farallon, he became a strong supporter of environmental policies and actively advocated for many anti-climate change issues.

In 2006, he supported the OneRoof initiative in India, which aimed to provide rural students and residents with access to computer technology. In 2007, he and his wife Taylor established Beneficial State Bank to assist individual non-profit organizations, disadvantaged communities, and others with financial needs.
