Career
He met Steve Mariucci, a former NFL head coach from his hometown when he was a child. Both attended the same high school and were teammates on the football, basketball, and track teams. They were also housemates at Northern Michigan University. He played for his university’s men’s basketball team from 1973 to 1997, breaking a school record for minutes played. After graduation, he was hired as the head coach at Ishpeming High School for one season.
Later, from 1979 to 1983, he was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. In September 1983, he was hired as a part-time assistant at Michigan State. In addition, Tom Izzo served as an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986. Furthermore, he was named assistant head coach before 1990 and was named head coach of men’s basketball at Michigan State University in 1995. (MSU).
Similarly, he was named the seventh angrier coach in college basketball by USA Today Sports in 2013. MSU won nine regular-season Big Ten championships and five Big Ten Tournament championships under Tom Izzo’s leadership. In addition, on November 26, 2015, he won his 500th career game.
