Sale began his career as an illustrator for the 1983 fantasy series MythAdventures and the 1978 shared world fantasy series Thieves World. The nature and personalities of MythAdventures were lauded. Road to… was inspired by the comedic film series. Thieves’ World debuted in 1979 and was canceled in 1989. He later worked with Jeph Loeb to create Batman: Year One. In 2011, it was transformed into an animated film about Batman’s first year as a crime fighter. It also delves into the life of James Gordon, culminating in their initial meeting and partnership against Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Color series for Marvel Comics such as Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, and Hulk: Gray were also created by Sale and Loeb. Captain America: White, a limited series, was announced in 2008, with the first issue issued that year and the remainder in September 2015. Captain America: White garnered favorable reviews from reviewers, and it was narrated by Steve Rogers, who remembered a mission with Bucky Barnes during WWII. In 2007, Sale co-created the Superman Confidential series with Darwyn Cooke. It told tales about the superhero from his childhood. The next year, the show was canceled.
