Tim Matheson was born in Glendale, California, on December 31, 1947. He grew up with his family there. The well-known actor was born to Sally and Timothy Matheson. Sue, his sister, is his only sibling. Unlike him, though, nothing is known about Sue and his parents.
The actor is not only skilled but also well-educated. For his high school education, he attended two local secondary schools: John Burroughs High School and Fox Lane High School. Later, he went on to study at California State University, Northridge, and The Groundlings.

Following that, in 1964, he provided the voice of the main character ‘Jonny Quest’ in the mega-popular Hanna-Barbara children’s animated TV series of the same name.
