Hasselbeck was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills in 2000 and was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad in 2002 as a free agent.
He was signed by the Washington Redskins in 2004 and spent two seasons as a reserve quarterback. He was promoted to the starting lineup in 2003, and on December 7, 2003, he completed 13 of 19 passes for 154 yards to lead the Redskins to a 20–7 victory over the New York Giants.
