Timothy Armstrong was born on November 25, 1965, in California, United States. His father, Don Armstrong, died in 2012 at the age of 81, while his mother’s identity remains unknown to the wider world. Tim met Matt Freeman in Albany, California, when he was five years old, while playing Little League Baseball, and they subsequently started a band.

Tim received his primary education at Albany Middle School. He then enrolled at Albany High School, where he finished his high school studies. He did not continue his education after high school since he chose to pursue a musical career.

Tim and his old classmate Matt Freeman established the band Basic Radio in 1985. Despite not releasing any albums or EPs, they did make demos and eventually disbanded. In 1987, he co-founded another Operation Ivy band, which disbanded in 1989 after releasing their debut album.

In 1989, Armstrong and Freeman created a new Dance Hall Crashers band. Joel Schaaf, Erik Larsen, Andrew Champion, and Grant Mclntire made up the band.
