He was forced to retire from football at 26 due to a knee injury in 1999. He began his coaching career in 2000, working with VfB Stuttgart’s youth squads. In 2009, he was appointed head coach of the newly-promoted Bundesliga team Mainz 05. On April 19, 2015, he was named the new head coach of Borussia Dortmund. In his two seasons with Dortmund, he only won one trophy, the DFB Pokal, in 2017.
He got a two-year contract with PSG in May 2018, replacing Unai Emery. Thomas Tuchel signed an 18-month deal with Chelsea in January 2021.
