Ravanel founded Ravanel Development Corporations, a commercial real estate firm. In 2004, he attempted to succeed Fritz Hollings. Hollings had stepped down as the United States Senator. After competing in the Republican primary election, Thomas was elected to position three. He then supported Jim DeMint, who won the general election. Ravenel ran against incumbent state treasurer Grady Patterson in 2006. Patterson, a Democrat, had held the position for nine years. Thomas was elected State Treasurer of South Carolina following the 2006 general election.
