The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, a new Netflix series from acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, is due to launch on the site on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 3 a.m. ET. It follows the narrative of a young girl who comes to Kyoto to pursue her ambition of becoming a Makanai, or traditional chef. The series is based on Aiko Koyama’s manga and stars Mori Nana in the main role, as well as a number of others in key supporting parts. On December 5, 2022, Netflix released the official trailer for The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, which gives a glimpse into an arcane world with interesting people. The trailer begins with a voiceover saying,
“It’s as though we’ve gone back in time. So here is where we will live.”
Following that, the trailer follows the lives of the two main protagonists, who have just relocated to Kyoto to pursue their ambitions of becoming Makanai. The two girls are seen learning to make traditional meals and pursuing various art forms while mingling with the many residents of the residence.
Overall, the teaser has a heartfelt tone that fans of the director’s prior work will definitely like. Along with the teaser, Netflix has released a brief synopsis of the series, which reads:
“Set in Kyoto’s geisha district, this series follows Sumire, an apprentice geisha, and Kiyo, a chef at the maiko home where they dwell, and depicts their everyday lives via wonderful cuisine.”

According to the description and trailer, audiences can expect a warm, emotional drama that addresses a variety of intriguing subjects such as tradition, dreams, and the beauty of human connections, among others. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House will allegedly include nine episodes, all of which will air on the same day, January 12, 2023.
