In the state of Indiana, Haggard was born. J. M. Haggard, a veterinarian from Yorktown, Indiana, founded a worldwide charismatic ministry that was featured in a PBS Middletown documentary series. After hearing evangelist Bill Bright preach in Dallas, Texas, and being acquainted with C. S. Lewis’s Christian apologetics, Haggard became a born-again Christian in 1972, at the age of 16.
As a co-editor of his high school newspaper in 1974, Haggard published candid essays about services available to prevent and treat increasingly common pregnancies and STDs. These pieces sparked a lot of debate in his area, leading to a free-press lawsuit against him.
