In high school, Bessell played lacrosse with future NFL great and actor Jim Brown.

Bessell chose to pursue acting after attending Georgetown University and the University of Colorado. He trained with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse, dance, and dramatic movement with Martha Graham and Louis Horst, professional acting class with Meisner, and another professional acting group with Wynn Handman.
