She won silver in the 2019 World Championships. Sydney also owns the world under-20 record of 53.60 seconds after setting a junior personal best of 52.75 seconds in 2018. At the 2016 New Balance national outdoor high school championships, Sydney won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds, breaking Maxie’s prep record, the world youth record, and Lashinda Demus’ American junior record of 54.70.

McLaughlin started her outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the national high school record for the 300 m hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational. McLaughlin was awarded the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year in 2015-16 and 2016-17. She was the first athlete in the award’s 15-year history to win it twice. When she won the award for the second time in July 2017, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated at the age of 17, and the magazine called her “one of the most dominant high school athletes ever.” After one year at Kentucky, she relinquished her NCAA eligibility to go pro in June 2018, and in October of the same year, she signed a sponsorship contract with New Balance.
