Sydel has played volleyball since she was a child. Charlotte Christian was a four-year starter and team captain for three of those years. Her team reached the state quarterfinals three times, and in 2012, she helped set a new school record for most victories in a season. She earned four CISAA All-Conference selections (2009-12) and two NCISAA All-State selections (2011-12).

She played club for the Carolina Union and represented the squad at nationals in 2012. Sydel redshirted her first year after injuring her knee during the season. Curry had a successful first season.
