Her father was a miner and World War II veteran who also sang at the Bishops Blaize, and her mother was a shorthand typist. Her parents were both born in the Lanarkshire town of Motherwell. They also had ancestors from County Donegal in Ireland.
Boyle was the youngest of four brothers and five sisters, born when her mother was 45 years old.
