All About Steve Salas
Steve Salas was born on January 5, 1949, in Lincoln Heights to Mexican American parents. He and his brother, Rudy, began performing at neighborhood gatherings as children. Salas participated in the controversial Lincoln High School student walkout in 1968, which was part of the early phases of the Chicano power movement. After graduation, he was awarded a full academic scholarship to Stanford University. He stayed for two years before returning to Los Angeles to join his brother Rudy in the Chicano R&B group El Chicano. He was a featured performer on Van Morrison’s Brown-Eyed Girl version, which peaked at 45th on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972.
The brothers then departed El Chicano to establish Tierra, releasing their debut album in 1973. At the time, the band was also a member of the Chicano political movement. Their music sparked protests and became a staple of the East L.A. soundtrack. In 1975, the group’s next album was published. In 1980, they released City Lights, which contained a cover of Together, which lasted in 18th place on the Billboard Hot 100. Memory and La La Means I Love You, two of their other hits, were featured in the Hot 100 in 1981. Tierra has also been on television programs and at the American Music Awards. The brothers subsequently chose to split up and never rejoined. Rudy died in the year 2020.
“One of East L.A.’s best bands,” says netizens of Steve Salas.
