On March 24, 1930, Julia Ann gave birth to Steve McQueen at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana. William Terence McQueen, his father, was a Barnstorming flying circus stunt pilot. Growing up for Steve McQueen was challenging because his father abandoned his mother six months after they first met. She was unable to transport the child alone, so she left Steve McQueen at Slater with her parents, who raised him as a Catholic. Steve McQueen moved back home with his mother when he was eight years old; she was then living in Indianapolis with his stepfather. His stepfather mistreated him and beat him repeatedly.
