Steve was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn on July 8, 1935. Max Liebowitz and Hellen Liebowitz, both Jewish, gave birth to him. Max is a cantor and a house painter. Steve first demonstrated his talent for singing as a child at synagogue.
When he was a teenager, he began studying music and learning to play the piano and saxophone. Simultaneously, he began writing and arranging songs. Steve returned to singing when he entered Thomas Jefferson High School, and because he was serious about his career, he took singing lessons.
