Career
At the University of Vermont, Stan Van Gundy got his coaching career started as an assistant. In 1983, the NAIA awarded him the title of “District 5 Coach of the Year.” After that, he led the “Castleton Spartans” to victory in the NAIA’s Mayflower Conference from 1984 to 1985. Later, the 1985 NAIA District 5 Men’s Basketball Tournament was won by the Castleton Spartans.
Stan did the same thing in 1987 while serving as an assistant coach at Canisius College. Later, he rose to become the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s head coach (1988–1992). He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin. Later, in 2994, he was appointed head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers.
Stan spent eight years as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat of the NBA. He oversaw this team’s 42-match winning streak in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. On December 12, 2005, Stan announced his resignation as the Miami Heat’s head coach.
