According to reports, Srinivas Krishna Iyengar Bhagavan was interested in performing and appeared in performances for ‘Hirannayya Mitra Mandi’. Later, in the 1956 film Bhagyodaya, he made his debut as an aide to Kanagal Prabhakar Shastri. Following that, he directed his first film, Sandhya Raga, in 1966, though it was formally attributed to AC Narasimha Murthy.
However, he and AC Narasimha Murthy were listed as co-directors of the 1967 picture Rajadurgada Rahasya the following year. He made his formal directing début with Jedara Bale (1968), which he co-directed with Dorai Raj under the moniker Dorai-Bhagavan. They were also the first Kannada filmmakers to create pictures in the James Bond manner. Following that, they helmed a slew of pictures, the vast bulk of which were based on Kannada books. Their pictures were extremely successful in the cinema business.
