Sigi Schmid was born in Tubingen, West Germany, on March 20, 1953, under the sign of Pisces. His full name is Siegfried Schmid. When he was born, his parents were Fritz and Doris. He moved to the United States with his parents when he was four years old. Despite having lived in America for the majority of his life, he speaks German at home.

Career

Sigi Schmid began his professional soccer career in 1972, following his enrollment at UCLA. Until 1975, he was the Bruins’ starting midfielder. The UCLA Bruins were able to claim the runner-up spot for the first two seasons following his arrival.

Later in his senior year of 1975, he was named to the All-Far-West team. He finished his UCLA career ranked 11th all-time in assists.

In 1975, he began coaching at Bishop Montgomery High School and later co-founded the South Bay Vikings. From 1977 to 1979, he worked as an assistant coach at UCLA under Steve Gay. He was named head coach following Gay’s departure in 1980. In 1984, Soccer America magazine named him Coach of the Year. He was the head coach at UCLA from 1989 to 1999.

Following that, he was named head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer in 1999, a position he held until 2004. He finished his career with the Los Angeles Galaxy with an overall record of 79–53–32 and a postseason record of 16–7–3. In 2009, he was named the inaugural coach of Seattle Sounders FC. Similarly, he left the club in 2016, when assistant coach Brian took over and went on to work for ESPN as a studio analyst. Sigi was named the LA Galaxy’s new coach on July 27, 2017. He left the Galaxy in September 2018 following a difficult season.
