Sharon Oster worked at Yale University for 43 years as a professor and administrator. She started teaching undergraduate students at Yale College after graduating from Harvard University. She joined the Yale Economics Department’s faculty there. Later the same year, in 1983, she joined the faculty of the Yale School of Management and was given tenure. She was the first woman to be appointed to a position of tenure. She was then appointed the Frederic D.Wolfe Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship.
Between 2008 and 2011, she served as a tenured member of the Yale School of Management faculty for almost three years until retiring in May 2018. Oster accepted a 100,000 cut in her yearly pay during her time at the Yale School of Management in 2009 to fund student internships. Sharon Oster announced a professorship and an endowed chair in economics in 2018. Oster is also a published author. She has five scholarly works to her credit, including Modern Competitive Analysis (1990, updated 1993 and 1999) and Strategic Management of Nonprofits (1995).
