On Saturday, June 4, famed Colombian pop singer Shakira (aka Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) and Barcelona center-back defending footballer Gerard Piqué announced their separation after more than a decade of marriage. The announcement of their divorce follows suspicions of Piqué’s adultery. However, similar charges were made by untrustworthy sources and have subsequently been substantially disproved.
The former couple issued a joint statement to the press in which they stated:
“We’re sorry for confirming our breakup. We want respect for our privacy in order to ensure the safety of our children, which is our first concern. Thank you for your patience.”

There are also speculations that the Colombian singer caused the breakup because of Gerard Piqué’s rumored adultery. However, as revealed by FC Barcelona sports writer Reshad Rahman, Piqué’s alleged adultery with another Spanish player Pablo Gavi’s mother was incorrect. These charges stemmed from a satirical narrative. So yet, no reliable reports have supported such assertions. Melih Esat AIL, an international freelance journalist, first reported the parody news. The report, however, has now been erased.
Shakira and Piqué’s divorce was revealed only days after the singer filed an appeal to avoid a tax fraud trial in a Spanish court. According to Spanish authorities, the Barranquilla, Colombia native failed to pay “14.5 million euros ($15.54 million) in tax on income received between 2012 and 2014.”
Meanwhile, the singer and her lawyers claimed that she was living in Catalonia at the time and had just recently returned to Spain. However, upon her return, the pop artist said that she had always paid income taxes. Last week, her lawyers told Reuters:
“Shakira’s tax behavior has always been excellent in all of the nations where she had to pay taxes.”
So yet, there has been no indication that this legal problem was one of the reasons for their divorce. As of yet, no claims about the reason for their divorce have been verified.
