According to him, it was the USMNT who assisted him when things did not go well and helped him get through the difficult moment, for which he is grateful. He would not have gotten to where he is now if they hadn’t given him a chance. Every time he felt guilty about not being picked for the Netherlands national team after reaching the last round of selection, he remembered his father telling him that he also possessed an American passport.
Though he was born and bred in the Netherlands and enjoyed living there, he believed the United States was his best alternative, adding that tough decisions must be made in life.

Dest defines himself as a calm individual who constantly attends to his own affairs. He claims that he is constantly resting with his family and friends, or with anybody he can. He is not the kind of guy who wants to be a part of what everyone else is doing.
