Sally Anne Struthers was born on July 28, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, to Margaret Caroline (née Jones) and Robert Alden Struthers. Her father was a surgeon, and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Sue is her one and only sister.
Struthers’ father abandoned the family when she was ten years old, leaving her to be raised by her single mother, a Norwegian immigrant. Grant High School was where she finished her education.

Sally Struthers debuted in the 1960s and rose to fame in the early 1970s. She landed her first significant role in the 1970 film Five Easy Pieces, opposite Jack Nicholson. She made her film debut in the box office smash The Getaway in 1972.
Struthers rose to prominence as Gloria Stivic in the 1970s television sitcom All in the Family. When she appeared on the dance reality TV show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, she caught the attention of the show’s producer, Norman Lear.
Struther initially assumed that her role would be played by Reiner’s then-fiancée, Penny Marshall. Candice Azzara played Gloria for a short time before she was dropped from the show.
