Ryan was on vacation at the Key West Hotel when the disaster occurred. He plunged from a pier into the Atlantic Ocean, but the water was too shallow, and he broke his neck. In the crash, Duffy injured six vertebrae, breaking three and fracturing three. At the time, it was reported that Duffy was recovering in Miami’s Joe DiMaggio Hospital.
Ryan was suing the Key West Hotel a year after the tragedy because the general manager failed to warn customers about the dangerously shallow, muddy waters of the hotel’s ‘dimly illuminated’ pier.
