Ron Rivera (Ronald Eugene “Ron” Rivera) is an American football coach and former player who currently serves as the head coach of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers (NFL). He also worked as a defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers.

He also played college football at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was named an All-American linebacker. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the second round of the 1984 NFL draft, and he was a backup on the 1985 team that won Super Bowl XX.
Rivera was the defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2006 when they won the NFC and competed in Super Bowl XLI. He was named Panthers head coach in 2011. Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 2013 and 2015. He has led the Panthers to three consecutive division titles and an appearance in Super Bowl 50 since taking over as head coach.

Ron Rivera received a football scholarship to the University of California, where he was a consensus All-American linebacker, leading the Golden Bears in tackles for three years. He once held the all-time sack and career tackles records for Cal, and he still holds the record for most tackles for loss in a season, which he set in 1983.
