Her mother was a church organist, and her father was a Veteran Administration draftsman. Her childhood was spent in Arlington, Virginia. During her childhood, she was a member of the choir at Lomax African Episcopal Zion Church.
She began playing the piano when she was nine years old. In her adolescence, she received a music scholarship from Howard University.
