Robert Garrow’s Profession & Career
Garrow moved back to New York in 1957 when he married and had a son. His life did not improve; he was dismissed from a succession of petty jobs, including one at a fast food restaurant that he had burglarized, and he was in an abusive relationship with a guy he subsequently characterized as a sadist. In 1961, Garrow was arrested for rape. He pled guilty to first-degree rape and was sentenced to jail terms ranging from 10 to 20 years. Garrow was granted parole in 1968. He perpetrated a string of rapes shortly after his release, and many of his victims were minors.
He was caught for the rape of two prepubescent girls, but he jumped bail and fled. Garrow killed four people in July 1973, including a young lady he abducted and violently raped before murdering, and a high school-aged camper a few days later in the Adirondacks. Three witnesses fled and sought police assistance, sparking a twelve-day statewide search that was the greatest in New York State history at the time. Roadblocks were placed at crossroads around the Adirondack Park, forcing vehicles to open car trunks so that law officers could inspect them thoroughly. Motorists were urged not to stop for anybody on foot near the roadways in case Garrow pretended to be a hitchhiker. Environmental Conservation Officer Hilary J. LeBlanc cornered him in the woods 60 miles (100 km) north of the crime site and shot him in the foot, arm, and back. He survived, claiming to be half crippled.
