Career
Savage started his football career with Liverpool F.C., although he never appeared in a professional game for them. He spent the 1982–83 season on loan at Wrexham, then signed for Stoke City at the conclusion of that season, but after just seven appearances in the first four months of the 1983–84 season, he moved on to Bournemouth in December 1983. He was a member of Harry Redknapp’s Third Division squad that defeated Manchester United 2–0 in the 1983–84 FA Cup. Savage joined Bolton Wanderers in September 1987 for a cost of £30,000 after a brief stint with Bradford City.
On September 12, he made his debut against Halifax Town and scored his first goal for Bolton a week later against Torquay. On 7 May 1988, he scored the winning goal against his previous club Wrexham to secure Bolton promotion from the Fourth Division, and he appeared in the Football League Trophy final at Wembley in 1989. Savage made his last professional appearance on April 7, 1990, against Preston North End. He shattered his leg during the match and was forced to retire as a result of the injury. He was appointed as Knowsley United’s player-manager. Savage was involved with Tranmere Rovers’ Football in the Community initiative in 2006.
