It’s time to get into the Halloween mood, since The Munsters will be available on Netflix next week. The series, produced, written, and directed by Rob Zombie, is based on the 1960s family comedy of the same name, but takes place prior to the events previously presented in the series, acting as the character’s genesis. It follows the disastrous lab experiment Herman Munster as he pursues Lily, attempting to win her heart and hand despite her vampire father’s best attempts to sabotage their romance. Everything you need to know about Netflix’s The Munsters.
What we know about The Munsters: cast, synopsis, and other details
Rob Zombie’s The Munsters is due to launch on Netflix on Tuesday, September 27 at 3 a.m. ET. In the principal roles, Jeff Daniel Phillips plays Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie plays Lily Munster, and Daniel Roebuck plays The Count. Universal 1440 Entertainment and Spookshow International Films collaborated on the film.
The official summary for the film is as follows:
“Lily is a normal 150-year-old lovelorn vampire yearning for the man of her dreams – until she meets Herman, a 7-foot-tall green experiment with a gold heart. In a Transylvanian romance, these two ghouls fall teeth over feet for one other, and it’s love at first sight. Unfortunately, it’s not all plain sailing in the graveyard since Lily’s father has other plans for his cherished daughter’s future that don’t include her new fumbling lover.”
Richard Brake, Sylvester McCoy, Jorge Garcia, Catherine Schell, Cassandra Peterson, Dee Wallace, Pat Priest, Butch Patrick, Jeremy Wheeler, Tomas Boykin, Roderick Hill, Mark Griffith, and Fred Coury round out the cast.

In June, a teaser video for The Munsters was released, which featured a black and white reproduction of the original series’ opener before switching to Herman, Lily, and Grandpa sitting uncomfortably on a sofa. In July 2022, the full-length teaser was published, hyping the film as the “strangest love tale ever told.”
Rob Zombie is notorious for employing a lot of blood and gore in his films, yet The Munsters is rated PG. House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects are two of Zombie’s most popular productions. The film will also be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and video on demand. The Munsters initially aired on television in 1965, with Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster, the family’s head who resembled Frankenstein’s monster. Yvonne De Carlo played Lily, the Munster clan’s vampiric matriarch, with the werewolf youngster Eddie and the family’s resident Grandpa, played by Al Lewis, who was also a vampire.
The comedy had a significant impact on Rob Zombie’s life and career as a filmmaker. In an interview, he said the following:
“Herman and Lily make an excellent pair, but we’ve only seen them as parents. I was curious to learn how they met and how their love story started. It seems more logical to me to attempt to develop on these classic figures rather than simply draw an exact replica. We already had the traditional show, which is fantastic, so I decided to take the feel of that and go in a new route.”
Don’t forget to watch The Munsters on Netflix on Tuesday, September 27.
