Richard E. Grant was born in Mbabane, Swaziland, on May 5, 1957. His father, Henrick Esterhuysen, was the chief of education for the British government, and his mother, Leonne Esterhuysen. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Stuart Esterhuysen.
St. Mark’s, a local government school in Mbabane, was where he received his education. He then studied English and Drama at the University of Cape Town after attending Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA).
